I’ve been thinking a lot about early turbo cars recently. I’m talking 1980 and older stuff here. I’d like to own an old classic turbo car and shock people that it was originally made with a turbo when it was new.
There aren’t many pre-1980 Turbos but all the ones I can think of are:
Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo
Chevrolet Corvair Turbo
BMW 2002 Turbo
Porsche 930 Turbo
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (The 4.9, not the GN V6 turbo one)
I’m sure the carbureted turbo cars are cantankerous and hate to run right but I still kind of want one. The Oldsmobile, BMW and Porsche are out of my price range but a turbocharged Trans Am or Corvair sounds like fun.
What do you think? What’s your favorite 1980 or older turbo?

The 78 Buick Regal turbo sport coupe (there was also a LeSabre turbo sport coupe as well), a very early version of the Grand National’s turbo
And of course, the Saab 99 turbo

It’s between the 930 and 2002 for me, but the 930 takes it.

The Corvair and the T/A would get my votes. I’m sure you could make the T/A run much better than it did from the factory when you don’t have to worry about emissions regulations.

Pssst. Big pulley driven means slower spin on the driven shaft. (Given the same size crank pulley.) Just FYI.

Definitely the Jetfire. Because it requires Turbo Rocket fluid.
